Steel. Glass. Concrete.

5 October 2023 - 20 November 2023

Mikhail Rozanov is one of the most famous modern photographers with a recognizable style and range of subjects, working primarily in monochrome technique. His oeuvre is distinguished by extreme minimalism, academic rigour and restraint. Since 1995 Mikhail Rozanov’s works have been regularly exhibited in Russia and abroad. The photographer participates in various international biennales and art fairs. He is a member of the Russian Union of Art Photographers. Since 2015 he has been working exclusively with Ruarts.

The exhibition ‘Steel. Glass. Concrete.’ shows images of European modernist architecture dating from the 1950s to 1980s, photographed between 2018 and 2020 in Madrid, London, Paris, Rotterdam, Milan, Berlin, Belgrade, Helsinki and Moscow.

Modernist architecture of the 1950s and 1980s is defined as the last ‘great style’ of Europe, capturing the postwar sense of optimism, the desire for simplicity of form and clarity of proportion. According to Mikhail Rozanov, “In this way I wanted to emphasize that in the space of art and style there is only one boundary – between the original and the secondary, the talented and the mediocre, and so superb Moscow buildings of the modernist era stand next to Paris or Madrid in the photo series”.

Mikhail Rozanov’s exhibition reflects the author’s perception of buildings and structures that are his contemporaries, that surrounded him as he was forming his own style: deliberately geometric, brutal, monochrome, perfecting perspective and composition, the contrast of light and shade.
